How Learning Works

Learning means: constructing knowledge from experience. That means nothing else than that new knowledge always develops based on the already existing knowledge. If pupils get the opportunity to use their previous knowledge and establish a connection to the world they live in, they are in the business. It is more difficult for them to stay on the ball even with boring learning material. If the reluctance to build becomes more significant than the “urge to construct,” the subject’s interest can decrease despite the increase in learning.

What teachers find out time and again is proven by science: During puberty, learning is not worth mentioning. The head’s construction site is to blame because, with puberty, the brain experiences a real growth spurt. Nerve signals run faster, but some paths are now more rigid and no longer as flexible. That is why learning a foreign language is also more difficult.

What Students Need

The magic word is motivation. This does not mean “bribing” children with rewards for good grades. Of course, praise is a good incentive. Most importantly, give praise to the child for their effort and how they solved a specific task. For self-esteem, it is vital to feel that you are productive. It is crucial that children themselves can combine learning with a sense of achievement.

An activated brain is an excellent basis, but that is of little use if the motivation to learn is missing. Then it becomes even more challenging to sit down and concentrate on your work. Learning to learn also means being able to motivate yourself. Self-control is more important than intelligence for school success. This is why even on an international youth exchange program, students need to find the easiest way to learn for themselves.
