Methods to Keep Machinery From Rusting

Rust is a nightmare for many machine owners. If you live in a humid environment, you’re highly likely to experience rusting on our equipment. This will impact not only the look of your devices but also their functionality. All is not lost, though! There are multiple ways to bring back the luster to those rusty machines and appliances. However, this takes a lot of effort and time.

Here are ways to prevent rust in your machinery?

  1. Clean after use

Dirt and grime can corrode your equipment, particularly when it mixes with grease and oil. Clean your equipment after each use and dry thoroughly before storage. This will preserve the machines from rust and enhance their durability. If you still experience some rust, Kor Pak can help inspect, repair, or upgrade your equipment and cranes for optimal functioning. They also supply different products and machine accessories like cable reels.

  1. Proper storage

Store your machines in a dry place. Clean and dry them after use, oil the machines that you’re not using. Also, cover with a bed sheet to keep off dirt and dust. Choose a breathable material that keeps dirt at bay and air movement to the minimum.

Again, avoid storing your machines near an open door; this exposes them to elements that increase their likelihood of rust. Store your devices and tools in areas that are not exposed to humidity and ways from the door. This can be indoors or in a shed when they are clean and dry. If it’s not possible to store your machines indoors, park them on concrete, gravel, or wood blocks to them off the ground.

  1. Treat with rust preventive products.

Rust prevention is a cost-effective way of keeping your machines rust-free. Use rust-prevention products; they are designed to hinder moisture from developing. They form a barrier on the metal’s surface, coat and protect them from rust.

  1. Coat with plow-bottom paint

Plow-bottom paint will keep your tools clean and shiny. You can get it from most stores near you, and you can spray or apply it directly on the machine’s blades, sweeps, and disks. The paint will remain intact when the devices are in storage but peels off when in use. Therefore, touch up the scratches to avoid rusting in the affected areas.

  1. Grease the moving parts

Water can seep on bearings and other moving parts during storage. This will cause rust and corrode the parts. Therefore, grease all bearings and moving parts before storing your machines. This will prevent corrosion and maintain your machinery in excellent condition when not in use.

  1. Hang hydraulic fittings

Hydraulic tips are prone to corrosion during storage. When detaching hydraulics from a tractor, don’t drop them on the ground. The connections will get rusty and, worse still, not fit well when you try hooking them later on. Instead, hang the hoses on the machine and keep the tips off the ground.

Final thoughts

Rusting can affect the functionality and durability of your machines. To keep them from rusting, consider the tips mentioned above and enjoy rust-free machines. Moreover, inspect your devices often to spot ant signs of rust and oil the moving parts regularly.
