- Upload. Click the upload area or drag a picture onto it. JPG, PNG and WebP files all work, so it doubles as a JPG to transparent PNG converter.
- Adjust the tolerance slider. Tolerance decides how close to pure white a pixel must be before it disappears. Start low, around the bottom third of the slider. Raise it a little at a time if you still see a pale haze or speckles around the edges.
- Check the preview. The preview sits on a checkerboard so you can spot leftovers. Look closely at the outline of the subject. If white parts inside the picture, like eyes or a shirt, start to vanish, turn the tolerance back down.
- Download PNG. Click Download PNG to save your image to transparent PNG format, ready to paste into a slide, a worksheet or a sticker layout.

What a Transparent PNG Really Is
Every digital picture is a grid of tiny squares called pixels. Each pixel stores a color, and some formats also store a fourth value called alpha. Alpha says how solid the pixel is. Full alpha means solid, zero alpha means fully see-through, and the values in between give soft edges and gentle shadows.
A PNG transparent background is simply a set of pixels with zero alpha. When you lay that picture over a page, the page color shows through those pixels. That is why a pumpkin from our pumpkin clipart page can sit on orange paper with no white rectangle around it.
Soft edges matter more than people expect. Good clipart has a thin ring of half see-through pixels around the outline, so curves look smooth on any color instead of jagged.
PNG vs JPG vs WebP for Transparent Backgrounds
Not every file type can hold alpha. Here is how the three common formats compare.

So when you convert JPG to PNG transparent results do not appear on their own. Changing the file ending only changes the container. The white pixels are still white until a tool removes them. That is the job of a remover or our in-browser tool.
Make PNG Transparent With Tools You Already Have
A free online remover. Many websites remove backgrounds automatically. Upload the image, wait a moment, and download the result as a PNG. These are quick for photos of people and pets. Read the site's privacy terms before uploading anything personal, and check the edges, since hair and fur can come out patchy.
A slide app's remove background tool. Most presentation programs have a picture format menu with a remove background or set transparent color option. Click the picture, choose the option, then click the white area. To keep the result, right-click the picture and save it as a picture in PNG format. This is handy for teachers already building a lesson deck.
A photo editor's magic wand. In a photo editor, open the image and add a transparent layer below it if needed. Pick the magic wand, set a small tolerance, and turn off contiguous if white gaps inside the picture also need clearing. Click the white background, press Delete, then shrink or soften the selection edge by one pixel to remove the white fringe. Export as PNG, not JPG.
Whichever route you pick, zoom in to at least 200 percent before saving. Leftover specks are easy to miss at normal size and show up badly on dark paper.
The Checkerboard Myth
A gray and white checkerboard is how editors show transparency. It is not part of the picture. The trouble comes from search results and some download sites that bake a fake checkerboard right into a JPG. Those files look transparent in a thumbnail but print with a gray grid behind the subject.
To test a file, paste it onto a colored slide or a dark page. A real transparent background PNG lets the color show through. A fake one shows the checkerboard squares. On our site the background preview does the same check for you: switch to chalkboard or kraft paper and look at the edges.
Saving and Printing a Transparent PNG
- Always save as PNG. If you export as JPG at the last step, the clear areas fill in with white again.
- Keep a copy of the original. Clear pixels cannot be brought back later, so work on a duplicate.
- Paper is not transparent. A printer simply skips the clear areas, so you see the paper color. On colored cardstock the clipart sits right on the color.

How do I make a PNG image transparent?
Open it in our tool above, raise the tolerance slider until the white backdrop disappears in the checkerboard preview, then click Download PNG. If the background is a photo rather than plain white, use a photo editor's magic wand or an online remover instead.
Can I turn a JPG into a transparent PNG?
Yes. Load the JPG into the tool, remove the white, and download. The result is a new PNG with real alpha. Renaming a JPG to end in .png does not do this, because the white pixels stay in place.
Why does my transparent PNG show a white box in my document?
Usually the picture is set to sit in line with the text, or it was saved as JPG at some point. Change the wrap setting so the picture floats, and check that the file really ends in PNG with see-through pixels.
Why are there white specks around the edges?
Edge pixels blend the subject color with the old white background, so a low tolerance leaves a pale halo. Raise the tolerance a little, or in an editor shrink the selection by one pixel before deleting.
